The Conservation Society of Sierra Leone (CSSL), in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in Sierra Leone, has successfully concluded a one-day sensitization and engagement meeting for local communities on REDD+ processes at the Chinese Farm in Kenema City on 15th January 2026. The meeting brought together community leaders, youth representatives, women’s groups, and other community stakeholders from all five regions of the country, all united by a shared concern for forest conservation and sustainable livelihoods.
According to the CSSL Communications Manager, Abdul Kaprr Dumbuya, the engagement was designed to deepen community understanding of the REDD+ processes. He said, REDD+ is an acronym meaning; Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation, while also promoting inclusive participation in environmental decision-making. Through interactive discussions, presentations, and question-and-answer sessions, participants were educated on the importance of protecting forests, not only as natural resources but as lifelines that support livelihoods, food security, and climate resilience.
Mr. Dumbuya emphasized that the Sierra Leone REDD+ project is people-centered and development-driven. He explained that the initiative seeks to improve forest conservation, mitigate the impacts of climate change on vulnerable communities, and enhance community development through sustainable practices.
“Our forests are our heritage and our future,” Dumbuya said. “Through the REDD+ processes, communities are not just beneficiaries, but key partners in the entire project. This initiative aims to protect the environment while also improving the quality of life of the people who depend on it.”
The Executive Director of CSSL, Dr. Sheku Kamara noted that deforestation and forest degradation continue to pose serious threats to rural communities, increasing their vulnerability to climate-related shocks, including flooding, unpredictable rainfall, and declining agricultural productivity. Dr. Kamara furthered that, REDD+ provides an opportunity to address these challenges by encouraging sustainable land-use practices, strengthening community ownership of forest resources, and creating pathways for long-term development.
Mr. Musa Septimus Koroma from the REDD+ Project Implementation Unit at the FAOSL delivered various presentations on the concept of REDD+, including key principles, Monitoring, Reporting and Verification, and carbon financing, among others. All of these were geared toward enriching the knowledge and understanding of participants about REDD+ processes and their role in the project.
Like other participants, Madam Doris Fatima Webber from Waterloo in the Western Area Rural District welcomed the initiative and praised CSSL for bringing the discussion to the community level. “I’m very delighted for the clarity provided by CSSL and FAOSL on how REDD+ works, our rights and responsibilities as community members, and the potential benefits of conserving our forests for present and future generations”, Madam Webber expressed. She noted that the concerns raised during the meeting were openly discussed, reinforcing trust and mutual understanding between CSSL and the communities.
Julius Sama, Senior Conservator at the Ministry of the Environment and Climate attached to the Forestry Division in Kenema District said, the role of the Ministry is to oversee the functions of partner organizations in implementing policies regarding efficient forest management and conservation.
During the meeting also, elections were conducted to have a governance body for the National Network of Local Communities on the REDD+ for an initial term of three years. The executive body established will form part of the broader outreach strategy of the REDD+ project to ensure that local voices are adequately heard for the success of the project.
At the end of the elections, Madam Doris Fatima Webber was elected Chairperson, Siddie Mohamed Baion from Kenema as Deputy Chairperson, Gibril Turay from Kambia as Secretary General, Mohamed Quee from Bombali as PRO and Madam Judith Yeama Harleston from Bo as Treasurer.
