Today we celebrate the International Day of Forest. The theme for this year is “forest and sustainable production and consumption”.
With 80% of terrestrial species worldwide living in forests, continued deforestation is the biggest threat for the survival of many species. With ongoing deforestation human activities are driving extinction at a rate 1000 to 10,000 times beyond natural levels.
As the world`s population is increasing at an alarming rate, the consumption of natural resources is also increasing. Hence, these resources should be conserved to maintain ecological balance and save them for future generations.
Protecting forest habitats is key to protecting our planets remaining biodiversity. Sustainable production and consumption are key to save our remaining forests and our well-being.
Let`s work together to save our forests for future generations – because we need them.
