The fourth documentary in our series “We for Nature. Nature for Us.” is about “The Yawri Bay – saving mangroves saves lives”. Mangroves are important to mitigate climate change, to secure fresh water and life stock for fishing communities and reduce soil erosion. Still, the mangrove forests are under threat.

Sierra Leone has a long coastline with many communities depending on the sea. Fishing communities like in Tombo and in the Yawri Bay complain about lesser catch for several years now. One reason is the destruction of Mangrove Forests along the coast. Mangroves are the breeding areas for fish, they keep the soil in place and protect the cost from erosion. Mangroves keep more carbon than any other tree, which is  what makes them crucial in the fight against climate change.

Meet fishermen, wood sellers and the fish drying woman who explain the challenges they face as they rely on the mangroves and their wood, but at the same time, know that they have to protect them to ensure the protection of their own livelihoods.

The audio of the video is in Krio and Timne. Switch on subtitles for the English translation.
